Tina Fey: “Bitch is the New Black” / Tina Fey: La Perra es el Nuevo Negro
..........This week’s host of NBC / Telemundo’s Saturday Night Live (“SNL”) tackled head on the US politics and comedy. Notably with the opening the most recent debate with CNN/CNN+ and Spanish Language network Univision conducted in San Antonio, Texas. The skit primarily focused on Univision’s Jorge Ramos as one of the two panellists, all of whom swooned over Mr. Obama and either ignored or badgered Mrs. Clinton with a hilarious satire this week’s debate: “The three of us are totally in the tank for Senator Obama”, opening the debate, throwing relatively simple questions to Obama and Harder questions to Clinton
..........On “Weekend Update,” Governor Huckabee appeared as himself as Seth Myers, the co-host of the news/ satire, told him that it was mathematically impossible for him to win the Republican presidential nomination, Mr. Huckabee said he would not overstay his welcome and would “exit with class and grace.” At which point he remained on the set. He had to be prompted several times to leave. Finally he got it, mumbling that “normally I pick up on those things.”
Clinton
..........In another segment on “Weekend Update,” Tina Fey discussed women’s issues, one of which was Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy.
..........For those not too familiar with this idiomatic expression; in English there is the idiomatic expression: “__________” is the new black. The origin appears to go back to Diana Vreeland in 1962 who used the phrase "Pink...(is)...the navy blue of India" meaning that the colour pink seemed to be the foundation of the attire there, much like navy blue was the base colour of most ensembles in New York City. The expression is also referred to a Snowclone which is formula-based cliché that uses an old idiom in a new context.
..........She did a few jokes on a few stories, and then went into her Hillary Clinton appeal. Fey made the case to elect a woman and vote for Hillary and about how far women have come. They are so empowered that they don't feel obligated to vote for a woman. Fey said, "Women today feel perfectly free to make whatever choice Oprah tells them to. "Which raises the question: Why are people abandoning Hillary for Obama?"
..........Tina Fey approached the bitch issue and said that being a bitch, like Hillary, is good because "bitches get things done," Fey mentioned people's fear of a co-presidency, her response was: "people have a problem with the co-president idea, why, because having two intelligent people solving our Nations problems together would be a BAD thing? It’s like telling Starsky not to talk to Hutch!"....
..........She brought up Rush Limbaugh's statement that the American people were not ready to see someone become an old woman before their eyes (Fey responded that no one had a problem when Ronald Reagan did it). The transcript is not online yet, but I could get the very last part and that was so great:
Tina Fey:
“I want to say something about those calling Hillary a bitch...”
“Yeah, well she is...”
— Sí, la es…
So am I, so is she (pointing at Weekend Update news host Amy Poehler)
“Deal with it”
— Supéralo ya.
“Bitches get stuff DONE!” (Amy says yeah and starts nodding her head, together they get in a rhythm, with Amy saying in response, more yeahs, uh-huhs and a you go girl)
— Las perras se hacen las cosas bien. (Mientras reciba el apoyo de su colega)
“Like back in grammar school, they could have had priests teaching you but, no, they had tough old nuns who slept on cots and who could hit ya and you HATED those bitches. But at the end of the school year you sure KNEW the capital of Vermont!”
“So COME ON Texas and Ohio!”
— Entonces vamos por ello Tejas y Ohio
“Get on board, it's not too late!”
— Subid, no es tarde.
BITCH IS THE NEW BLACK!
— ¡LA PERRA ES EL NUEVO NEGRO!

The King and His subjects: 2 Fined €2.730’00 for burning his photos.
If it takes a king to shut Chávez up, He appears to be keeping the dissent in check on the home front as well. King Juan Carlos’ words at the Ibero-American Summit set off a furore with consequences -- potentially both economical and very costly politically: raising issues with the intentional meaning of His remarks amongst the 200th anniversary of self rule for the Spanish colonies.
Renown writer and philosopher Fernando Savater wrote in El País 16 November 2.007, Spain lost a measure of influence in Ibero-America as a result of the King's dismissal of Chávez: “until now, the King had executed a role that was officious and nearly paternal, as historic head of the Ibero-American Commonwealth. That function will become improbable, if not impossible, from now on." Obviously not just in IberoAmerica, but also on the Iberian Peninsula as well.
The Honourable José María Vazquez Honrubia of the National Court handed down a guilty verdict of insulting the Spanish royal family against two college students, Jaume Roura and Enric Stern. This was the same investigating magistrate that also fined two cartoonists for depicting Crown Prince Felipe engaging in sexual congress with his wife on the cover of a magazine.

Prosecutors sought a 15-month prison sentences for the two young men, however, in his ruling, Judge Vázquez-Honrubia said it would be better for the two to pay a fine so they learn "they can have whatever ideas they want, but they cannot attack the basic institutions of the state."
Their preliminary hearing was suspended for some 10 minutes when the two accused refused to answer questions in Spanish, and the search began for a Catalonian interpreter as the court reporter could not speak the language and would be unable to take notes. At the proceeding, the judge said he spoke Catalonian, and said the audio tapes of the session could be transcribed at a later stage. Like other Spanish regions, Catalonia has its own language and distinct culture and is home to strong nationalist sentiment.
Police arrested 19 others for burning royal images at a demonstration held at the scene of the original protest in support of the two protestors on 22 September 2.007. They await being informed if charges will be filed.

Chávez: a Week Later – no quieter, except his bladder.
The Ibero-American Summit (Cumbre Iberoamericana) never makes headlines; the Spanish version of the Commonwealth of Nations summit tends to go under the radar to most in the Anglophone world. Except last week.
The most hilarious scene before the world press which set off a diplomatic spat now threatening Spanish investments in Venezuela – a major oil producer, transpiredwhen King Juan Carlos Borbón I of Spain told Hugo Chávez to shut his pie hole. Well, what he said was “¿Y Por qué no te callas?” For those in English-speakingrealms, this would be like Queen Elizabeth II telling John Howard of Australia where to go and how. But what caught my attention wasn’t the whole issue of a bad translation, but rather how the world press ran with this story everywhere to nth degree, and made me think and laugh at how such a small nuance of “why don’t you be quiet” turned into “Shut Up!”
Since then, YouTube, news websites, blogs and any other form of new media that has the poor writers in LA striking, contain the myriad of postings, debates, and bloggers running the gamut of liberty of expression to basic manners and common courtesy. Whatever position you take on the issue, this is one of the funniest diplomatic rows seen and not involving such depressing overtones such as the Iraqi quagmire or a “worthless dollar.”
Now reaching another – be it anticlimactic point, on President Chavez’ visit to Portugal, France and the OPEC summit, Spain sent a new set of ambassadors from the European Union and Portugal who controls its presidency as of late, citing Spain’s Foreign Relation Minister, “we keep the diplomatic channels open and try to overlook the mix-up in Santiago de Chile. We hope this matter will be settled as soon as possible.” Hugo Chávez’ response: “I have to pee.”
The Venezuelan President who vowed never to ‘shut up’ needed to bow down tonature’s calling over the weekend at the OPEC summit in Saudi Arabia –surrounded by reporters in his usual extended media spotlight and lengthy questionand answers session to excuse himself. "Look I have to go,"Chavezsaid in comments aired on Venezuelan state television. "For a while now, Ihave needed to go to the bathroom and I am going to pee ... Do you want me topee on you?" Classy
Much better than a tacky MySpace page... My humble commentaries on global affairs, business, culture, design, farándula/corazón + life in general: a different look.
