2006: Globos de Oro: Mejor película de habla no inglesa / Bélico (II Guerra Mundial) / SINOPSIS: Rodada íntegramente en japonés, la película ofrece la versión nipona de la batalla que Eastwood ha plasmado en otro filme, "Banderas de nuestros padres" (Flags of Our Fathers, 2006), que recoge la visión estadounidense. Ambas películas narran las perspectivas de ambos bandos sobre la batalla más cruenta de la II Guerra Mundial en el Pacífico, en la que fallecieron más de 20.000 japoneses y 7.000 estadounidenses. Además, tras su preestreno en Japón el 16 de noviembre, ambas han sido aplaudidas por la crítica como una clara denuncia de la guerra y como un valiente e inédito intento de mostrar las dos caras de una contienda.

La versión estadounidense muestra la llegada de la imponente Armada de guerra norteamericana a la pequeña isla del Pacífico desde la que se defendía el territorio japonés y, sobre todo, la utilización propagandística de la famosa foto de los seis soldados alzando la bandera de EE UU. La película desde el punto de vista japonés se centra en la resistencia nipona, organizada inteligentemente a través de túneles gracias a la estrategia del general Tadamichi Kuribayashi -Ken Watanabe-.
