En esa época, el color verde era distintivo de sexualidad e incluso prostitución, según los estudios de Nevill Coghill sobre la obra de Chaucer "Los Cuentos de Canterbury", obra del siglo XIV coetánea al "Decamerón" de Boccaccio y de temática y estructura muy similares. Cuenta la leyenda que quizá fue escrita por Enrique VIII, consumado músico, escritor y poeta, como protesta amorosa durante su cortejo a Ana Bolena, aunque tal hecho no está probado. La balada es una Romanesca, forma de canción popular de origen español y de moda entre el siglo XVI y principios del XVII, que se compone de la secuencia de cuatro acordes sobre una base repetida, lo cual permite una flexibilidad en la variación de la letra para la improvisación del canto e idónea para los bailes galantes de la corte en aquel momento. Esta obra se menciona en dos ocasiones en "Las Alegres Comadres de Windsor" de William Shakespeare (1602) Las versiones de su letra y música son incontables, desde las más tradicionales hasta el heavy metal, tanto sólo instrumentales como cantadas.
