Vicente Orden Vigara, presidente de la Diputación Provincial de Burgos, hizo de maestro de ceremonias de un acto que contó también con la presencia del alcalde de Atapuerca, Fernando Gómez, mostrándose ambos orgullosos de que un año más el cross sea una realidad y cada vez con un mayor nivel de participantes. De hecho, en 2008 el Cross de Atapuerca fue considerado el segundo mejor de España, solo por detrás del Cross de Itálica, de Sevilla, y con ello se ganó el derecho a estar incluido en el calendario europeo de campo a través, del que precisamente será la primera prueba puntuable. Por eso el domingo se darán cita en Atapuerca muchos de los mejores atletas de la especialidad, tanto de España como de otros países de Europa y también de África, siendo estos últimos los que en principio partirán entre los favoritos en las dos categorías sénior, masculina y femenina. Serán 1.800 los atletas que disputen el cross divididos en 16 categorías, desde benjamín hasta veteranos, estando prevista la primera de las carreras (cadete femenino) para las 10.30 horas. Mientras, la prueba sénior femenina se disputará a las 12.25 horas y la sénior masculina tendrá lugar a las 12.50 horas. El presupuesto del VI Cross de Atapuerca se eleva a los 135.000 euros y la prueba será ofrecida por TVE a través de su canal Teledeporte. Además, y de forma paralela, se celebrarán sendos certámenes de dibujo para escolares de la provincia y otro a nivel nacional de fotografía. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Apoyo unánime</span> Tanto Marta Domínguez como Juan Carlos Higuero y Diego Ruiz agradecieron la invitación para disputar la carrera, en la que buscarán ir afinando su puesta a punto, y resaltaron el nivel de los atletas que tomarán parte en la misma. Las miradas puestas en otros grandes de la especialidad, el sueco Stefan Johansson, el ruso Shchennikov, el checo Pavol Blazek o el polaco Robert Korzeniowski. Pero competir en casa, a veces te da alas y Plaza conocía bien el circuito, la terrible subida al Estadio Olímpico, capaz de romper al mejor marchador. <p align="justify"> Con 26 grados de temperatura, 88% de humedad y un calor reinante que quemaba el asfalto, los grandes favoritos fueron cayeron poco a poco; así a mitad de carrera se formó un cuarteto formado por el veterano Maurizio Damilano, que llevaba tres podios consecutivos; oro en Moscú y doble bronce en Los Angeles y Seul, el canadiense Leblanc y los españoles Massana y Plaza y algo más retrasado el italiano De Benedictis. A medida que pasan los kilómetros, los dos españoles no ceden e incluso toman metros de ventaja ante la inminente subida a la montaña de Montjuic. Daniel Plaza se sentía fuerte marchando antes sus paisanos y decidió asestar el golpe definitov a falta de cuatro kilómetros para meta, marchándose en solitario por delante con decisión. En la última vuelta Plaza asentó su liderazgo y comenzó a ascender la colina de Montjuic en dirección al estadio, mientras que por detrás Massana comenzaba a decolgar a Leblanc. La apoteosis reainaba en el estadio puesto que dos españoles estaban a punto de conseguir un soñado doblete. Sin embargo, a falta de 600 metros para entrar al Estadio llegaba un gran jarro de agua fría cuando Massana era descalificado al recibir el tercer aviso. Era sin duda un duro revés ... pero por delante Plaza seguía su camino hacia el título olímpico y por fin lograba entrar al Estadio, donde fue recibido bajo una aclamadora ovación. El público vibraba con los últimos pasos del marchador catalán, que exultante de alegría cruzaba la línea de meta en un registro de 1h21:45 con clara ventaja sobre el canadiense Leblanc, plata y el italiano De Benedictis, bronce. El 31 de julio de 1992 se convertía en una fecha histórica: primer campeón olímpico en atletismo. <p align="justify"> Daniel Plaza nació en Barcelona el 3.7.1966. Vistió la camiseta nacional absoluta 34 veces y debe gran parte de sus éxitos a su entrenador Moisés Llopart, el "gurú" de la cantera de El Prat. Disputó tres Juegos Olímpicos: Seul'88 (12º), Barcelona'92 (1º) y Atlanta'96 (11º).
