Esta vez lo hacía en su versión más desnuda, al no contar con el apoyo en escena de su tremenda banda Roseland Rhythm Revue ni las impresionantes coristas de gospel que le acompañan, las McGrary Sisters. </div><div>-</div><div>El concierto arrancó con una pausada versión de su revisión del gospel clásico de Mary don't you weep, con el que consiguió estremecer y meterse al público en el bolsillo nada más comenzar. Desde este momento el de Tennessee nos hizo reir, </div><div>llorar, bailar, dar palmas, corear, hizo con nosotros lo que quiso. Me sentí afortunado </div><div>de ver el concierto en primera fila junto a la mujer de Mike. El momento más especial </div><div>fue quizás cuando presentó el tema dedicado a su hija Rose, fallecida de cáncer hace 5 años,</div><div>y ver y escuchar los sollozos de Mike y su mujer en la presentación y durante la canción. </div><div>-</div><div>Repasó temas de sus Screeming Cheetah Wheelies y nos pidió que hicieramos los coros de sus </div><div>McGrary Sisters en Sit Down Servant. </div><div>Casi dos horas de concierto en el que hubo tiempo para todo. </div><div>-</div><div>Un concierto así de especial no se ve muy a menudo. Se habla, se lee, y con mayor frecuencia se olvida, quizás contaminados por versiones más edulcoradas de este género primigenio: en definitiva, las glorias al Creador.<div> </div><blockquote></blockquote><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"></span>Por todo ello, y por más razones - que al ser musicales sólo merecen ser destiladas con un oído atento - la aparición del álbum documental <em>Como Now. The Voices Of Panola Co., Mississippi</em> es, precisamente, una bendición. Lo califico de documental porque, navegar por los 16 cortes grabados en la Iglesia de Mt. Mariah del estado mencionado, es un excelente esfuerzo de amor e investigación por el archivo y difusión de un legado en vías de extinción. Una herencia que, en las voces de las Como Mamas, Mary Moore, Brother and Sister Walker o las Jones Sisters, salta al corazón sobrecogido de cualquier aficionado, enterado o no, a las músicas de raíz. Funcionan en su máxima eficacia porque, siendo un agnóstico de ley como soy, me sucede con estas alabanzas lo mismo que cuando escucho a Johann Sebastian Bach. Me hacen dudar de mi incredulidad y casi casi me entran ganas de buscar la Biblia, y darle una segunda oportunidad. Pero tranquilos: de momento no ha sucedido, y la música de <em>Como Now</em> - y la de Bach - sigue permaneciendo como lo que es: una creación terrenal magistral (si queremos, prueba fehaciente de lo que puede hacer el hombre, cuando se dedica a cosas más enriqucedoras que sacar los ojos unos a otros).</div><div> </div><blockquote></blockquote><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"></span>Estas voces, estos artistas de parroquia, grabados por el productor Michael Reilly para uno de mis recientes descubrimientos (el sello Daptone) - ¡gracias Bombín! - inundan tu casa por su fuerza, la radicalidad de estar construidas sobre una tradición improvisada pero delineada domingo a domingo. Basta arrancarse con el diálogo circular de las Como Mamas y Mary Moore en el arrebatador "Trouble In My Way" para enamorarse de estas gentes, sus vidas y sus espacios forjados junto al estilo de vida del <em>Main Street</em> norteamericano. En 1929 conoce al compositor Thomas A. Dorsey, algo decisivo en su carrera. En 1948 grabó "Move On Up A Little Higuer", que vendió ocho millones de copias, algo inédito en el mundo del gospel. Este disco catapultó a la fama a Mahalia en EE.UU., y poco después en Europa. Es la primera cantante gospel en actuar en el Carnegie Hall, en 1950.
