Los Orbison son moteros, pero en 1966, Roy sufre un accidente de moto en el que muere su esposa Claudette, quedándose solo con sus tres hijos. Le dedicó una canción, "Too soon to know" que llegó arriba en las listas británicas, a pesar del éxito de los Beatles.
La tragedia le persigue y en 1968, cuando se encontraba de gira por el Reino Unido, un incendio en su casa de Tennessee acaba con las vidas de sus hijos Roy (13 años) y Tony (8 años). Dificilmente levantará cabeza, su vida quedará marcada, a pesar de su segundo matrimonio (1969) y a pesar de continuar con su carrera. Con los años, vuelve a sus orígenes country conservando su inmensa voz.
En 1985 firma temas como "Wild hearts" que será banda sonora del film "Insignificance", y "Coming home", tema que da título al elepé del "Curso del 55", reunión de artistas de la Sun ( a la que hicimos referencia anteriormente).

Se hace popular en Reino Unido y Australia con nuevas y atractivas canciones, con tono bastante melodramático. Su voz lo puede todo. Son temas como "Blue Angel" (1960), "In Dreams", "Crying" (1961), "Running Scared" (1961), "Dream Baby" (1962), "It's Over" (1964), "Falling", "I'm Hurtin' ", "Mean Woman Blues", "Blue Bayou", o la ya clásica "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964).
(Aunque no es mi costumbre, deseo exponer algo personal: Me fastidia que "Oh, Pretty Woman" vaya asociada a la simple película del mismo título, de 1990, con actor y actriz de moda, me fastidia que la preciosa canción de Roy ORbison, dedicada a las mujeres, se identifique con la historia de una prostituta "afortunada". Lo único positivo de este film fué que Roy, fallecido dos años antes, llegara a ser conocido por los más jóvenes.)

Roy firma contrato con la RCA y se va a grabar a Nashville, pero los temas "Almost eighteen" y "Paper boy" fracasan y la RCA le rechaza. En 1959 se cambia al sello Monument en el que se reedita "Paper boy" y "Uptown" sin mucha relevancia. El dueño de Monument, Fred Foster, desesperado ya, sugiere cambiar la línea de Orbison, pasando del rock and roll a las baladas. En 1960 surge "Only the lonely", que llega a ser número 1 y disco de oro convirtiéndole en estrella internacional.

Roy Orbison supo sobrevivir a una serie de adversidades en su vida personal y también a los cambios de tendencias musicales en su larga carrera (cuatro décadas). Fué uno de los grandes poetas musicales del pop de los años 60. Cantaba con su guitarra al amor y a la soledad. Con una voz incomparable matizaba cada palabra con una técnica única. Solía vestir de negro, su imagen es inconfundible.
Roy Kelton Robinson nació el 23 de Abril de 1936 en Vernon (Tejas, EE.UU.). Su padre le enseñó a tocar la guitarra, y pronto formó una banda, "The Wink Westerners", con la que tocaba música country. Fué evolucionando hacia el rockabilly. El nombre de la banda cambió, pasando a llamarse "The Teen Kings". Por su amistad con Buddy Holly, también tejano, conoce al manager de éste, Norman Petty, que le facilitó una grabación de dos canciones en sus estudios de Clovis (Nuevo México), eran "Tryin' to get to you" y "Ooby dooby", era el año 1956. Se editaron en el sello Jewel. Sam Phillips, dueño de la Sun Records, escuchó el disco y fichó a Roy. Sale otro disco con "Ooby dooby" y "Go, go, go" en la cara B. Consigue un gran éxito con 350.000 copias vendidas.

Los Everly Brothers proceden del country, del que sus padres eran intérpretes, y hacían giras juntos.
Nacieron en Brownie (Kentucky), Don, en Febrero de 1937, y Phil, en Enero de 1939. Comenzaron de pequeños a habituarse a los escenarios. Tras graduarse en la escuela superior, los hermanos se trasladan a Nashville. En Noviembre de 1955 consiguen un contrato por seis meses con la Columbia. Su primer disco fracasa. Consiguen después una audición con un importante editor, Wesley Rose, y graban un tema (de Felice y Bondleaux Bryant) que nadie antes había querido interpretar. Era "Bye, bye, love". Consiguieron un gran éxito en 1957.

Brenda Lee nace el 11 de Diciembre de 1944, en Atlanta. Ya destacaba en certámenes de talentos infantiles. Debuta en 1956, con solo 12 años, y consigue convertirse en ídolo adolescente. También sigue la línea del country en los años 60, pero antes nos deja bonitos dramas juveniles. Éxitos destacados suyos fueron "Dinamite", "Sweet nothings", "Will you still love me tomorrow?" y "I'm sorry", entre otros.
Hoy, con 64 años, sigue dando multitud de galas.

Del Shannon (Charles Weedon Westover, Dic. de 1934 - Feb. de 1990) es compositor, arreglista y productor, ademas de poseer una voz peculiar. Esto le merece el respeto del futuro pop de los 60 y 70 (Beatles, Elton John, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Dave Edmunds). En 1960 salió su tema más destacado, "Runaway". Después publicaría "Hats off to Larry" y "Little town flirt"(1962).

Ricky Nelson nace el 8 de Mayo de 1940. Sus padres actuaban en la radio en los años 40, y a partir de 1952 pasarán a la televisión. En Agosto actúa en concierto en Columbus (Ohio) ante unas 15.000 personas acompañado por "The Four Preps", fué una gran experiencia para él. En Noviembre de 1957 publica su canción "Be bop baby" que rivaliza con Elvis y Sam Cooke en las listas de éxito.

En 1963 ficha por Decca Records, y se desliza hacia el country. En el sello MCA creó "The Stone Cayon Band" confirmando su línea de country rock. Versioneó a Dylan y creó bellos temas instrumentales ("Song for Christie").
En 1971 actúa en un festival de "viejos rockeros" en el Madison Square Garden, experiencia que le deprimió y le motivó para hacer en 1972 el tema "Garden Party". Graba después en Capitol. Su último album será "Playing to win", con temas de Ry Cooder, John Fogerty y Graham Parker.
Camino de Dallas, a donde se dirigía para un concierto de fín de año de 1985, su avión privado se estrella muriendo todos.

A partir de 1957 el rock and roll decae debido, en buena parte, a una serie de funestas circunstancias que coinciden en esos años: Elvis se va a la mili, Carl Perkins está en el hospital, Chuck Berry es encarcelado, Little Richard siente la llamada divina para dejar el rock, Jerry Lee Lewis y Gene Vincent ven su prestigio por los suelos, y Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper y Eddie Cochran han muerto trágicamente.
Vuelve también la reacción conservadora contra el rock. Frank Sinatra diría en 1958 que el rock and roll era "la forma de expresión más fea, brutal, desesperada y depravada que yo haya tenido la desgracia de escuchar".
Comienzan a ser protagonistas los intérpretes de "buena presencia" y música dulzona que, con letras superficiales sobre sus problemas adolescentes, triunfan. Por lo general, no componen sus canciones. Muchos son de Filadelfia, son promocionados por Dick Clark en un programa televisivo; es el caso de Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon y Freddy Cannon.
