C. Baxter de El apartamento. Su vida era una tragedia. Tan dramática que, para el resto de los mortales, se convertía en una comedia. Una comedia ante la que cualquiera se sentía identificado. Porque, ¿quién no ha sido un poco C. C. Baxter alguna vez en su vida? La mayoría de los protagonistas de Casual day, excelente debut en salas del español Max Lemcke -su primera película, Mundo fantástico, presente en diversos festivales internacionales, no llegó a estrenarse en cines-, son C. C. Baxter en potencia. Forman parte de la jungla del ultracapitalismo, la que ningunea a la base de la empresa mientras le da permiso para ir en vaqueros y jersey un día a la semana: los viernes, el casual day del título. Prima segunda de El método (Marcelo Piñeyro, 2005) y hermana pequeña de Smoking room (Gual y Wallovits, 2002), Casual day es un retrato coral sobre el desprecio privado y público tan descarnado como jocoso, interpretado por un magnífico grupo de cómicos, conjuntado como si de una compañía teatral se tratase. Una carnicería empresarial y humana escrita con precisión, sencillez y negrísimo sentido del humor. Los hermanos Pablo y Daniel Remón, guionistas también debutantes, han compuesto su libreto a través de sucesivas conversaciones entre los de arriba, los de abajo y los de en medio, donde el machismo, la impostura, la estupidez, el instinto de supervivencia, la voracidad y el conformismo casi siempre resultan vencedores frente a la honestidad, la justicia y el sentido del deber. Mientras, por medio de una luz tan gris y tenue como las existencias de sus protagonistas, Lemcke coloca su mirada a la altura de sus personajes, sin rebajarlos ni ensalzarlos, para que el espectador decida en qué lugar quiere colocarse a sí mismo. En la cúspide, en el hoyo o quizá a medio camino. Y todo se lo debo a la mala calidad que está ofreciendo los laboratorios Technicolor en este momento. No he conseguido que ninguna de las copias hasta ahora tenga el color, el contraste, y la luz que debieran. Si es verdad que la copia exhibida en el Festival de San Sebastián se acercaba a lo que habíamos trabajado Javier Palacios, el director de fotografía y yo, pero a partir de esa copia ya no hemos conseguido el mismo resultado. Cuando una bobina era buena la siguiente era mala y eso hasta el estreno. Así que hasta ahora no puedo recomendar que utilicéis estos laboratorios. Casual day, en alusión a esa moderna práctica empresarial que concentra a los ejecutivos de cierto nivel en una especie de ejercicios espirituales lejos del lugar de trabajo, acierta a radiografiar una parte significativa de un entorno muy reconocible mirando de cerca y caleidoscópicamente a un grupo de personajes marcados por su relación laboral y por sus cuitas personales. La película de Max Lemcke, español pese a las apariencias, brilla sobre todo por la estupenda conjunción de unos diálogos inusualmente bien escritos y afinados, obra meritoria de los guionistas Pablo y Daniel Remón, y por el extraordinario trabajo de cada uno de sus actores, ajustadísimos todos a las variantes histriónicas que sus respectivos personajes requieren. En primer lugar, Juan Diego, apabullante en el papel del jefe de mayor jerarquía, un hombre hecho a sí mismo que hace ostentación de sus logros y pontifica sin descanso y con fingido paternalismo sobre las recetas que conducen al éxito. Junto a él, Javier Ríos, encarnando al advenedizo novio de la hija del jefe, Luis Tosar, inquietante retrato del machista cínico y curtido en la brega empresarial, o los siempre eficaces Álex Angulo y Carlos Kaniowsky. Del otro lado, junto a las fugaces Marta Etura y Malena Alterio, sobresale la todavía poco conocida Estíbaliz Gabilondo, que, en su condición de promesa en prácticas, asume al menos dos de los bis a bis más comprometidos de esta película coral que alcanza sus mejores momentos en las sucesivas confrontaciones intimistas de estos personajes marcados a fuego, aunque no sólo, por su posición en el organigrama empresarial. Quizás suene excesivo comparar el universo de esta meritoria Casual day con el mundo de David Mamet, con la dureza inclemente de Glengarry Glen Ross en particular, pero salvando todas las distancias habla también y con irreprochable contundencia de la ambición como motor esencial del ecosistema en el que vivimos, del imprescindible carácter depredador en el panorama laboral contemporáneo, de la inclinación a la sumisión de unos, de la relatividad de los principios éticos de cada cual y en definitiva de la perversa perfección de un sistema que premia a los mejor predispuestos a olvidarse de los escrúpulos. El planteamiento parece idóneo para un tipo de comedia cáustica poco frecuentada por el cine español pero el director opta por rebajar sistemáticamente los resortes de la risa, huyendo del chiste fácil y de la caricatura, hasta establecer una atmósfera inquietante, incluso incómoda, que desvela los aspectos más dramáticos. Injusta o accidentalmente ninguneada en los festivales de San Sebastián y Málaga, corre el riesgo de proyectar sobre su propia trayectoria comercial el estigma del mundo que retratan sus imágenes, que posterga paradójicamente a los mejores.
